CARING FOR A SIBERIAN HUSKY

Intel Inside

Siberian Huskies are very smart dogs and very hard workers. Some breeders will tell you they can be to smart for there own good. One of our huskies almost needs to be blind folded while we erect fences and install gates so she won't know how to take them apart and escape to areas of the yard not meant for her.

It is very important that anyone considering owning a Siberian Husky understand this breed. These dogs are very energetic and can become bored easily. Also, they were bred for the cold, which should raise many questions about warmer climates. This page will aid you in finding the information needed to understand Siberian Huskies and keeping them healthy and happy.

Keeping Siberian Huskies Cool

Is it neccessary to keep Siberian Huskies Cool? Siberian Huskies were bred to pull small loads over long distances and usually these loads were located in very cold climates. We have primarily been raising huskies here in Northwest Tennessee, which has a very mild climate. However, as you may be aware, the average tempature in many areas of the world has been increasing. This can be a concern for this breed of dog. I must mention that we took our dogs with us to live in Florida for three years and during this time we learned a lot regarding this breeds ability to adjust to different climates. In short, Siberian Huskies do have the ability to adapt to different climates, however I would not suggest relocating a Siberian Husky raised in Alaska to somewhere like Florida.

A lot of the puppies we have sold in the past were purchased to live indoors.  Though we do not allow pets to remain indoors, it is a common practice among others.  This is a sure way to help your pet beat the heat.  Otherwise, we recommend a large vat of water be available for these dogs to soak themselves.

A nice shady area of the yard is a plus! A refrigerator does a better job, but is not practical.

SIBERIAN HUSKY FREEDOM

Siberian Huskies are by no means a "Porch Dog". They love to have lots of space to play and they love to have a play mate. When a group of Siberian Huskies are kept together, play time last for hours. They pull each others tails, they wrestle and even "talk" to one another.

We realize, in most cases, it is not possible to keep more than one Siberian Husky, so it should be mentioned that your Siberian Husky will consider you a member of his/her pack. That means you will have a rank and your rank will have to be "Alpha". You will have to make your Siberian Husky know you are the boss. Establishing your rank can be done during play and training. Did I mention they like to play. I should also mention it is hard to exhaust a Husky. You'll be the one calling it a day long before your husky companion.

We discourage using a chain to contain any animal.  Siberian Huskies were bred to be active and need a safe area to run and play. So please use your chains for hanging a porch swing or a hammock to be used after your Siberian Husky has exhausted you during playtime.
